Vintage Omega Seamaster "Beefy Lugs" (c. 1950's)

With so many variations of the Omega Seamaster it's easy to get lost in the fray. But every once in a while, you find one the jumps out at you. For me, this is one of those Seamasters. 

Nicknamed the "Beefy Lugs" Seamaster (for obvious reasons), this sharp-edged example exhibits some of the best of the early Seamaster design cues. With its warm linen-like dial, applied gold breguet numerals, angular lume plots, concise 34mm sizing, crisp case design, fluted crown, and thick (ahem…beefy) lugs, this watch just oozes mid-century class and confidence. 

CONDITION

The case is unpolished, revealing sharp edges and the original bevelled edge that runs along side the sloping lugs. The case-back, which I suspect is a replacement from a slightly later Seamaster, is adorned with a perfectly sharp and untarnished hippocampus medallion. The inner case-back indicates a reference number of "2849-9 SC" while the watch is more likely to be a CK 2577 or similar (the first of the Seamasters from the early 1950's). This has all been taken into consideration, and the watch has been priced accordingly. 

The dial is exceptional, with very little blemishing. One perfectly squared lume plot flanks each applied breguet numeral at 3, 6, and 9, but at 12 there are two squared off lume plots (perhaps my favourite design detail of the watch).

The gold dauphine hands are in fabulous condition. The thin line of lume that runs through the minute hand and part of the hour hand has darkened likely due to some moisture exposure over the years. 

Service history is unknown, but the bumper automatic 354 movement is running as it should.  

The watch comes with a beautiful brown swede italian leather strap, and an authentic vintage red Omega box (seen in the pictures)
