Universal Genève Compax "Baby Nina" Ref. 884.495 Blue (c. 1990s)

There are few watches in today's market that deliver this much vintage charm, provenance, and mechanical substance for the money quite like the Universal Genève "Baby Nina". Inspired by the legendary 1960s Compax chronographs worn by style icon Nina Rindt, the reference 884 family of watches captures the spirit of one of Universal Genève's most celebrated designs while remaining one of vintage watch collecting's great under-the-radar opportunities.

During the 1990s, Universal Genève revisited its celebrated Compax chronographs through the "Compax 1950" collection, producing a series of remarkably faithful reissues that have quietly developed a devoted following among collectors. The steel reference 884.495 represents one of the most desirable executions, pairing a silver sunburst dial with striking blue registers and a matching blue acrylic tachymetre bezel. At 37mm, it wears with all the proportions and charm of a classic vintage chronograph, while benefiting from more modern construction and the robust, manually wound UG Calibre 84, a movement based on the legendary Lemania 1873 architecture, the same family of movement that powered contemporary Omega Speedmaster Professionals.

While original 1960s "Nina Rindt" Compax models now command prices many multiples higher, the “Baby Nina” offers collectors an opportunity to experience much of the same aesthetic magic and historical lineage at a fraction of the cost. Increasingly recognized by enthusiasts as one of the standout offerings from Universal Genève's Stelux era, examples of the blue 884.495 are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly in exceptional, original condition such as this example.

This particular watch is accompanied by its original Universal Genève 7-link stainless steel bracelet, sized to fit approximately a 7.25–7.5 inch wrist, as well as its original signed steel tang buckle.

Condition

This example presents in exceptional overall condition and appears to remain unpolished. The case retains its original geometry beautifully, with sharp edges, pronounced lines, and the original brushed grain along the case flanks fully intact. Overall wear is extremely light and consistent with careful use, with only minor hairlines throughout, a small nick on the lower left lug, and a couple discreet flea bites.

The silver-toned sunburst dial is exceptionally well preserved, remaining vibrant throughout. The signature blue sub-dials remain rich and vivid in colour, showing only a tiny mark within the running seconds register that is nearly imperceptible in normal viewing. The handset is likewise in excellent condition, with a faint blemish to the minute hand visible only under certain lighting conditions.

The bracelet is in excellent condition, presenting beautifully. Mild surface scuffing on the buckle and end links, but no major distractions 

The original blue acrylic tachymetre bezel is outstanding, presenting near mint with no cracks, significant wear, or fading. The plexiglass crystal is clean and free of any notable distractions.

Service history is unknown. However, the watch is currently running well, with the chronograph functioning correctly, starting, stopping, and resetting precisely to zero as intended. While there is no immediate need for service, it is always recommended that the new owner service the watch at their discretion to ensure long-term health of the movement.
