SBGY002 Grand Seiko 20th Anniversary Of Spring Drive (Yellow Gold)

The SBGY002 brings everything that is special and unique about the Grand Seiko brand together into one watch. It oozes celebration vibes. And in my opinion, the SBGY002 has all that you will ever want in an elegant dress watch.

In 1999 Grand Seiko unleashed the "Bionic Man" of watch movements. Embodying the soul of a mechanical movement, while benefiting from the precise time-keeping of a quartz-powered oscillator, the Spring Drive brought something completely new and exciting to the world of horology, and in the process managed to achieve one of the most accurate movements on the market. It was innovative. It was ground-breaking. It was a performance juggernaut. And it positioned Grand Seiko to more competently compete with the leading Swiss luxury watch market.

In 2019, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this crowning achievement in horological innovation, Grand Seiko released a beautiful four-piece series of dress watches, as part of their formal Elegance collection.

This foursome is particularly special in that it breaks away from the more common automatic Spring Drive movements. It is instead powered by a hand-wound Spring Drive movement, typically reserved only for the highest-end Grand Seiko and Credor watches.

Available now in the Watchable shop is the SBGY002, the only one of the four anniversary pieces presented in gold. And you haven't seen gold until you've seen Grand Seiko's signature zaratsu polished gold. Trust me. And if you weren't already going cross-eyed over these luxurious specs, this watch goes completely above and beyond with its outstanding Snowflake dial (arguably, the dial that further placed Grand Seiko on the map of luxury watchmaking in more recent years).

To sum it up, the SBGY002 brings everything that is special and unique about the Grand Seiko brand together into one watch. It oozes celebration vibes. And in my opinion, the SBGY002 has everything you will ever need in an elegant dress watch.

  • Original inner and outer box
  • Original operating instructions book
  • Certificate of Guarantee (dated January, 2020) and signed by the original Canadian AD it was purchased from.

The watch has been owned by just two very careful collectors, both who happen to be friends with one another. So the history of the watch is known and has been communicated. The watch was hardly worn by both owners, and when it was worn, it was done so with another strap. So the the OEM dark brown Croc leather that the watch originally came with is virtually unworn, and in near mint condition.

The gold case is in excellent condition. There is very light scuffing on the edge of bezel, and an small nick on the upper left lug. Other than the wear mentioned above, and two small scratches on the back side of one the lugs from a strap changing tool, the watch is in otherwise great shape. The gold buckle, embossed with the Grand Seiko logo, has some desk swirls, but is in otherwise excellent condition. The watch is running flawlessly, and keeping excellent time.
