Often mistaken for an Oysterquartz, the Rolex Date ref. 1530 was born from Rolex’s delay in bringing quartz to market - an automatic movement housed in the case and bracelet originally designed for their first quartz calibre, resulting in an unintended anomaly of which only 1,500 were ever produced.

A Note from the Curator

Even seasoned Rolex enthusiasts often mistake the reference 1530 for an Oysterquartz at first glance.

The angular case, integrated bracelet, and distinctly futuristic design language all point in that direction. But look closer. the subtly sloped rehaut adds depth to the dial…and then comes the real surprise:

This “Oysterquartz” is not an Oysterquartz at all...this baby is automatic!

Inside beats Rolex’s superbly accurate Chronometer-grade calibre 1570, revealing the 1530 for what it truly is, a high calibre mechanical watch, dressed in a case that was originally developed for Rolex’s upcoming quartz models.

But how did this happen? Well, this is where it gets interesting:

Born in the midst of the quartz crisis, Rolex hedged their bets with a side project that would be their answer to Japanese quartz, which threatened to decimate the Swiss watch industry entirely.

That project was the Oysterquartz, and it was running far behind schedule. With the case and bracelet already designed, and manufactured, Rolex fitted those elements with a proven automatic calibre as a temporary solution. Production lasted only a short window from roughly 1975 to 1977, with around 1,500 pieces made, making the 1530 one of Rolex's shortest production runs in it's history.

To me, this is one of Rolex’s sexiest designs; Bold, architectural, and unlike anything the brand had produced up to that point. And the fact that this striking case and bracelet exist in such an ultra-rare automatic form only deepens its appeal. It’s a piece that even the most seasoned Rolex collectors can appreciate not just for what it is, but for what it represents: a rare glimpse into Rolex’s mindset, and even its vulnerability, during one of the most uncertain chapters in Swiss watchmaking.

The 1530 was never meant to exist, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. Born in a moment when the future of the entire industry hung in the balance, this is Rolex adapting in real time, and accidentally creating one of its most compelling anomalies in the process.

Happy hunting,
- Brent

Condition Report & Contents

This example presents in exceptional condition. Serviced by Rolex in 2009, the was has been worn on a few times since, until its previous owner put it away for safe-keeping.

  • Running extremely well at approximately -1 to +2 seconds per day

  • Case and bracelet are remarkably crisp, showing only minimal wear consistent with light use. The previous owner has noted that the watch has not been worn since its 2009 service, so we would credit any of the light markings to its time in storage. On the case, there are a couple light clean scratches, one in particular on the upper left top side of the case, a couple minor flea bites, and a very light surface scuff on the lower right bevel of the case. The bracelet is exceptionally clean, showing some light scuffs on the clasp. (Please refer to pictures)

  • Case retains its strong geometry, with crisp brushing and still-visible bevels (lightly softened from a Rolex service polish).

  • During its Rolex service, the watch was thoughtfully fitted with a correct NOS rehaut + tritium service dial (featuring the proper three-notch configuration for the reference), service hands and crown, as well as a 17000B bracelet (dated 2006). The bracelet is tight, full 13 links, and in outstanding condition with only extremely minimal wear throughout, and light scuffing on the matching clasp.

Importantly, the watch is accompanied by its complete Rolex service documentation, including service notes and receipt, a significant plus for provenance and peace of mind.
