Patek Philippe ref. 2526 in YG w. Bracelet: Retailed by Somazzi (c. 1953)
DESCRIPTION
We are proud to present an extraordinary example of Patek Philippe’s Reference 2526, a landmark model in the brand’s history as their first self-winding wristwatch, and running on the renowned caliber 12-600 AT, celebrated for its precision, innovation, and aesthetic excellence.
With a run that lasted only between 1953-1960, this iconic reference was produced in three precious metal variations: platinum, pink gold, and yellow gold with only 600 units with the enamel dial assembled, and released into the market in total, making it one of the most rare and sought-after references from Patek Philippe’s catalogue.
The watch’s porcelain enamel dial, a hallmark of the Reference 2526, elevates its beauty and rarity to a whole new level. What further sets this particular piece apart is the presence of the "Somazzi" co-signature, denoting its retail collaboration, and sale through the prestigious Lugano-based Patek Philippe dealer. Double-signed dials of this kind are exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

PROVENANCE & COLLECTIBILITY
The double-signed dial, combined with the original bracelet and the importance of the 2526 reference, ensures this watch’s position as a grail piece for discerning collectors. With fewer than 600 examples of the Ref. 2526 produced in yellow gold, and an even smaller number featuring retailer co-signatures, this piece represents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly significant part of horological history.
The Patek Philippe Reference 2526 is historically significant as the first automatic wristwatch produced by the brand, housing the groundbreaking caliber 12-600 AT. This movement set a new standard for automatic watchmaking with its 18k gold rotor, superior finishing, and extreme efficiency, placing Patek Philippe at the forefront of innovation in the mid-20th century.
The model’s enamel dial is a testament to Patek Philippe’s commitment to craftsmanship, with its double-baked finish ensuring an unparalleled depth and sheen. First edition dials (identifiable by the subtle dimples around the applied hour markers), like the one on this watch, are particularly prized for their early production significance and their role in establishing the reference’s legacy.
Purchased new in 1954 from the famed Swiss retailer Somazzi, the first owner was the careful custodian of this watch for most of its life, until it was recently sold by his son to the current (and 2nd) owner. Throughout its 70+ year life, the watch was very well taken care of. The case remains in excellent condition. Its full gold bracelet, uncut and complete with all links, is something you simply don't see too often. Coupled with a pristine first-edition enamel dial bearing the rare Somazzi retailer stamp, this watch stands as a pinnacle of collectibility and historical importance.
The watch was serviced at some point by the first owner, and had the small seconds hand replaced at that time. All else appears to be original and in remarkable condition. This watch recently went in for a full service in November of 2023, and is running fabulously.
