WHY THE 3590.50 IS THE "MOONWATCH" SWEET-SPOT
The Omega Speedmaster is one of the most iconic watches ever made, and for good reason. Originally launched in 1957 as a racing chronograph, it wasn’t until 1969 that it cemented its legendary status when NASA strapped it onto the wrists of the Apollo 11 crew. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore reference 105.012, while Michael Collins wore a 145.012 as he orbited the Moon. Few watches can claim such a pedigree, and from roughly 1969 onward, the Speedmaster Pro has remained nearly untouched and unchanged in terms of design...a testament to how perfect and iconic this watch truly is.
Fast forward to the late ’80s, Omega introduced reference 3590.50 as the successor to earlier Moonwatches, and it carried the torch until 1996 when it gave way to the ref. 3570.50. On paper, little had changed from the Apollo-era models. 42mm twisted-lug case, black dial with stark white registers, Hesalite crystal, and that famous NASA-certified caliber 861 ticking inside.
But subtle differences set the 3590.50 apart from the references that followed, making it the last Speedy Pro to truly hold on to the best combined elements of the Speedmaster’s glory years: a tritium-lumed dial that ages gracefully into warm pumpkin tones (as seen on this example), and the classic 17 jewel caliber 861 - the exact same movement powering Seedmasters since 1968.
This makes the 3590.50 one of the most “pure” modern Moonwatches, true to the originals in look and feel. Today, collectors prize it as a sweet-spot reference: vintage charm without the fragility (or price tag) of a ’60s Speedy.
A true transitional Moonwatch, the ref. 3590.50 embodies everything enthusiasts love about the Speedmaster: Authentic vintage DNA, tritium charm, and NASA-certified heritage without venturing into fragile “museum piece” territory. A fantastic everyday-wearable classic.
