A NOTE FROM THE CURATOR
Introducing the LeCoultre Memovox “Speed Beat,” reference 3089-916, a remarkable specimen that perfectly captures late-1960s watch design and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s spirit of technical innovation. This U.S.-market example, cased within a chunky block 14k solid gold (really a lot of gold), boasts the instantly recognizable “egg” case profile: bold, sculptural, and unmistakably of its era. Measuring 37 x 41 mm, the watch wears with commanding presence, and in my opinion, is one of the finest examples of evolving watch design being brought to market at this pivotal time.
The star of the show is really its original fume sunburst dial, transitioning from warm bronze at the center to a smoky vignette at the edges. Honest in its aging, with only light spotting, the dial radiates vintage charm and depth that make every glance rewarding. Framing it all is an impressive chunk of gold: a unique egg-shaped case with striking contours.
UNDER THE HOOD
Inside beats the caliber 916 “Speed Beat,” JLC’s high-frequency automatic alarm movement, running strong at +1s/day. The Memovox complication remains one of the most nostalgic features in all of horology. Set via the inner rotating disc and powered by its own mainspring, the alarm delivers both a buzzing sound and vibration you can feel on the wrist...an utterly charming reminder of a time before smartphones.
This particular watch carries the history of U.S. allocation: during this era, JLC often shipped uncased movements and dials across the Atlantic to be housed and timed in America, skirting gold import tariffs. Inside the caseback you’ll find the proud “cased and timed in USA” inscription, a detail that firmly places this watch in a fascinating chapter of horological history.
Altogether, the LeCoultre Speed Beat Ref. 3089-916 is more than just a funky buzzing hunk of gold. It’s a window into a unique moment when watchmaking, economics, and style converged, resulting in one of the most charismatic Memovox references ever made.
