A radical Ingenieur, built to withstand magnetic forces so extreme, it pushed the limits of mechanical watchmaking itself.

A Note from the Curator

The IWC Ingenieur 3508 stands as one of IWC’s most daring technical experiments. An ambitious outlier that has become a sleeper cult favourite among collectors drawn to IWC’s most ambitious ideas.

Introduced in 1989 and produced only until 1992, the 3508 was a short-lived and highly experimental chapter in IWC’s long-standing pursuit of antimagnetism. Around 3,000 pieces were made in total, with fewer than ~615 believed to exist in this white dial configuration you see here. While the Ingenieur lineage dates back decades, and carries design DNA shaped by Gérald Genta, this reference pushed far beyond anything that came before it.

Rather than relying solely on a soft iron inner cage, IWC engineered the movement itself to resist magnetism. The Cal. 37590 (also referred to as 35790, based on the JLC 889) featured a niobium-zirconium hairspring and ruby rotor bearings, decades ahead of the widespread use of silicon components today. This allowed the watch to withstand up to 500,000 A/m, while also enabling a thinner case profile without heavy internal shielding.

In many ways, the 3508 was both a mechanical breakthrough and a commercial misstep (the price of chasing extreme antimagnetic performance at the expense of precision), ultimately limiting it to a brief four-year run. This antimagnetic juggernaut was simply ahead of its time. And because of that short production, collectors today reap the reward: a genuinely rare piece born from an era when IWC pushed boundaries without compromise, and created an exceptional rarity in the process.

This is exactly what makes this watch so compelling.

Visually, it remains understated: a compact ~34mm case, integrated bracelet, and clean, purposeful dial marked by the quiet “500,000 A/m” signature. It wears with a kind of architectural balance, true to the Ingenieur ethos, but more restrained, more industrial.

To me, this is what makes the 3508 so special.

It’s not just rare, it’s intellectually interesting. A watch from the late 1980s / early 1990's that feels conceptually closer to modern horology than its peers. A piece that dared to solve a problem in a completely different way, and accepted the trade-offs that came with it.

This isn’t just an Ingenieur. It’s a fascinating, ahead-of-its-time experiment, one that collectors are only now beginning to fully appreciate.

Condition Report & Contents

This example is in superb overall condition, showing only minimal signs of very light wear consistent with careful, infrequent use.

  • Case: Extremely clean with original finish intact, appears to be unpolished. A couple of minor fleabites and faint hairlines visible under close inspection.

  • Bezel: Light surface hairlines and soft scuffing, consistent with gentle wear.

  • Dial: Flawless tritium dial with all lume plots fully intact.

  • Hands: Excellent overall condition, with a small chip in the tritium on the minute hand visible only under close scrutiny.

  • Bracelet: Clean, tight, and well-preserved integrated bracelet with full links. Original finish consistent throughout.

  • Buckle/Clasp: Signed and correct, matching the overall condition of the watch.

  • Movement: Cal. 35790

  • SERVICE HISTORY: Service history unknown. Running at approximately -60 seconds/day.
