1960's Hamilton Super Compressor 600 (Ref. 64040-3)

The super-compressor is an icon of the early days of dive watch technology. Easily identified by its dual-crown configuration, and inner-rotating bezel, the real magic is in the spring-loaded case-back, a mechanism that allows the watch to become more water tight as it descends deeper into the pressurized abyss.

Here we have an exceptional example of a Hamilton Super Compressor 600. Hamilton, one of the early adopters of the groundbreaking Super Compressor technology, is an exciting niche of vintage watch collecting world, as they offer robust tool watch quality, storied provenance, and exciting retro designs…all at an accessible price point.   

ABOUT THE SUPER-COMPRESSOR

Patented in 1956, the Super Compressor was an ingenious tool, invented for deep sea divers. Designed with a spring loaded case-back, the seal became tighter as the diver descended deeper.

These cases were designed and manufactured by Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA), a Swiss family company with roots in the case-making business, dating back to the late 19th century. The company also interestingly manufactured bicycles in the early 1920's, but re-emerged as a pioneer in watch case-making starting again in 1939. 

Super Compressor watches can often be identified by their dual-crown design, and inner rotating bezel, and are a favourite collectible among enthusiasts, due to their unique design, and their innovate-for-the-time technology. 

CONDITION AND SPECS

Freshly serviced, and running exceptionally well, this example is in fantastic condition. The tritium lume on the dial has aged to a creamy yellow, and is intact in the hands, and on all the hour markers. 

The case is in excellent honest condition, with sharp edges with minimal wear, typical for a watch of its age. There are no obvious signs that the watch has been polished. 

The watch features both the original and clean cross-hair crowns (designed large and with extra grip for easy use in the water). Mounted on the watch is the original stainless steel bracelet, with the Hamilton logo stamped cleanly on the buckle. Bracelet includes most, if not all links and should fit any wrist, but please contact if concerned. 

The watch has recently been serviced and is running as it should.
