DESCRIPTION

The Grand Seiko SBGM221 has earned a loyal following for good reason. It’s one of the strongest entry points into the brand, not just in terms of value, but in overall design, build quality, and movement architecture.

Sized at 39.5mm across, the watch is a perfect blend of modern and classic sizing. The ivory dial is clean and well-proportioned, with sharp, faceted hour markers and dauphine hands. The blued GMT hand is a standout feature - visually striking but thoughtfully sized to sit below the main hands for better legibility. The 24-hour scale around the dial tracks a second time zone, and the flyer-style GMT complication allows for local hour hand adjustment without affecting the timekeeping or home time.

The case sits somewhere between sport and dress. Zaratsu polishing along the lugs adds definition and sharpness, while the gentle curves of the mid-case and tapered lugs help it sit low and wear slim. Inside is Grand Seiko’s in-house 9S66 automatic movement, offering a full 72-hour power reserve, 35 jewels, and an independent GMT function. It’s a reliable, workhorse caliber with refined finishing and solid performance specs (+10 to -1 seconds/day in normal use).

Offered on a brown crocodile leather strap with a deployant clasp, the watch also includes a blue alligator strap that brings out the tone of the GMT hand for a more contemporary look. This watch is a true strap monster that confidently embraces straps across the full colour and material spectrum.

CONDITION

Excellent pre-owned condition. Light surface wear around the case and clasp consistent with careful use. There is a light surface scuff on the lower right lug, hardly visible in most light. The original brown leather strap shows almost no signs of wear, or staining on the tan under-side, and only minor warping. The additional blue alligator strap is also in superb, hardly-worn condition, and pairs beautifully with the dial’s blue accents.
