A NOTE FROM THE CURATOR

In Japanese, Asaborake (朝ぼらけ) refers to the soft, hazy light just before sunrise. That fleeting moment when the world is calm and the light feels almost suspended in time. This reference, however poetic, feels entirely earned here. The dial of the SBGY011 is not loud or theatrical; it’s subtle, finely textured, and softly luminous. It's the kind of detail that reveals itself slowly, like first light breaking over the horizon.

What makes this piece especially compelling is the mechanical intimacy behind it. This is only the second model to pair a manual-wind Spring Drive caliber with the iconic 44GS case, and the first that is not a limited edition. No rotor. No obstruction. Just a beautifully finished caliber 9R31 on full display, complete with a discreet power reserve indicator on the movement side to preserve the purity of the dial.

The 44GS case, one of the most important designs in Grand Seiko’s history, is rendered here in a contemporary 40mm × 10.5mm profile. Slightly larger, slightly slimmer than the original 1967 reference, it wears with presence yet retains the elegance that defines the design. The razor-sharp lines, distortion-free Zaratsu polishing, and crisp faceting are quintessential Grand Seiko.

Then there’s that seconds hand. The perfectly smooth Spring Drive glide, hovering across the dial with ±1 second per day real-world accuracy.

This example was purchased new from an authorized dealer in January 2026 and has been ever-so-lightly worn. It presents beautifully and remains an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most refined modern expressions of the 44GS lineage...and one that is near new, at a fraction of its retail price (and that is definitely worth something too, isn't it?).

Condition:

• Light surface wear on the lugs and bezel consistent with careful use (please refer to photos).

• Strap shows almost no visible wear, with only a slight bend from normal wear and storage.

• Buckle is pristine with virtually no visible wear.
