An unconventional take on the jump hour, reimagined d by Gérald Genta, one of the most prolific watch designers of the 20th century, paired with one of the most compelling salmon guilloché executions in the model’s lineup.
A Note from the Curator
The Retro Classic Jump Hour sits in an interesting pocket of Genta’s legacy, far removed from the integrated sports models he designed for the likes of Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and IWC (not to mention one of my favourite watches from Universal Geneve, the Polerouter), and much closer to his personal fascination with playful, mechanically expressive complications. The G.3634 embodies that philosophy perfectly: pairing a jump hour with an unconventional minute display that snaps back to zero with each passing hour.
This 36mm salmon guilloché variant is particularly compelling. Production across the 3634 range was low and fragmented, with numerous dial configurations and case sizes, making specific combinations like this increasingly difficult to source. The warmth of the salmon tone, combined with the engine-turned Guilloché, gives the watch a depth that constantly shifts in changing light. This is a piece that feels very “Genta” in spirit: technical, yet whimsical.
What elevates this example further is the convergence of all the right elements: the rarer 36mm configuration, the highly desirable dark salmon dial (there was a lighter salmon variant at one point), and one of Genta’s most recognizable complication formats. It stands firmly within his philosophy of independent creativity, distinct from his more widely known work, and offers a level of individuality that collectors continue to gravitate toward. Pieces like this don’t surface often, especially in this configuration, and that scarcity only reinforces its appeal.
Happy hunting, Brent
