Elegant proportions, a silver-toned sunburst dial, and one of IWC’s most celebrated automatic movements from the famed Cal 85 family: this beautifully preserved vintage time-only IWC brings together so much of what makes the brand’s watches from this era undeniably wearable, reliable, and just plain fun to collect. Paired with a stunningly preserved period-correct IWC presentation box, it makes an especially charming package.
Note from the Curator
There is something wonderfully satisfying about a vintage time-only IWC. The proportions feel just right, the designs remain effortlessly wearable, and the restrained dials leave room to appreciate the details. These are watches that look as good with a sweater and jeans as they do beneath a shirt cuff, and, as this example demonstrates, they can age beautifully.
Their appeal goes well beyond appearances. Inside sits IWC’s manufacture automatic calibre 854, part of the celebrated calibre 85 family that helped establish the brand’s reputation for automatic watchmaking. Central to that family is the ingenious Pellaton bi-directional winding system, an enduring expression of IWC’s approach to practical, innovative engineering. (iwc.com)
Developed through successive generations of the 85, 852, 853, and 854 calibres, these movements combined technical sophistication with the robustness and reliability that make them so admired today. Across a wide variety of case shapes and dial configurations, they also give collectors plenty to explore: a shared mechanical pedigree, expressed through an exceptionally appealing range of designs.
For me, that combination is the attraction (especially if you’re building a collection from the Cal. 85xx series). Beautiful proportions, thoughtful engineering, and character. Considered together, these particular vintage IWCs offer exceptional value, and this example captures their appeal particularly well.
Happy hunting,
- Brent
