At the entry-level, few watches capture the appeal of vintage Rolex quite like the Air-King Ref. 5500. With its beautifully understated design, versatile 34mm Oyster case, and dependable automatic movement, the Air-King represents Rolex at its most essential purest state as a timeless, everyday watch that prioritizes simplicity, quality, and reliability.

Introduced in 1957 and produced until 1989, the Ref. 5500 became one of the longest-running references in Rolex history, remaining remarkably consistent in its design for more than three decades. This late-production example, dating to approximately 1987 (just 2 years prior to the ref. 5500's discontinuation), features a beautifully preserved silver-toned dial with gently aged tritium lume, paired with its original stainless steel Oyster bracelet. Its wonderfully clean aesthetic and honest vintage character make it an especially appealing example of this enduring Rolex classic.

A Note From the Curator

While much of the vintage Rolex collecting world focuses on the brand's more celebrated sports models, the humble Air-King has earned a devoted following among enthusiasts who appreciate the beauty of simplicity.

The Ref. 5500 embodies everything that made Rolex such a formidable watchmaker: a robust Oyster case, a reliable self-winding movement, and a restrained, purposeful design that has aged exceptionally well. By the late 1980s, the reference was powered predominantly by Rolex's Calibre 1520, part of the brand's celebrated 15xx movement family. These movements earned a reputation for their robust construction, longevity, and serviceability, qualities that have helped countless examples remain dependable timekeepers decades after leaving the factory.

There's also something particularly appealing about the Air-King's 34mm proportions. While modest by modern sports-watch standards, the compact Oyster case offers a beautifully balanced presence on the wrist, making it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate traditional sizing or simply prefer a watch that wears effortlessly in virtually any setting.

What makes this particular example especially attractive is its state of preservation. The clean silver dial, subtle warmth of the original tritium lume, and exceptional case combine to give it the kind of vintage charm that is increasingly appreciated by collectors. It's a wonderful reminder that a great Rolex needn't be complicated, oversized, or ostentatious to be thoroughly compelling.

Happy hunting,
- Brent

Condition Report & Contents

This Rolex Air-King is offered in excellent pre-owned vintage condition, showing modest wear consistent with its approximately 39 years of age. Please refer to the below photos for thorough coverage of the watch.

Case: The stainless steel Oyster case is very well preserved, displaying modest surface wear consistent with age and careful use. The case appears to remain unpolished, and we have intentionally left it in this condition to preserve its original finishing and character. Professional polishing can be arranged upon request prior to delivery.

Dial & Hands: The beautifully aged silver-toned tritium dial remains exceptionally clean, free of any visible blemishes or distractions. All original luminous plots are present and intact, having developed a very subtle, soft off-white to pale yellow patina. The original hands are likewise in excellent condition, with their luminous material remaining clean and fully intact. Together, they present a wonderfully cohesive and well-preserved vintage aesthetic.

Bracelet: The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet, Ref. 78350-19, with 557 end links. The bracelet remains in good overall condition, with light surface wear consistent with age. There is a small nick on one end link, along with some light surface scuffing to a bracelet link and its adjoining end link. The folding clasp displays minor wear and a slight bend along one side, which is barely noticeable and does not affect its functionality.

Crystal: The acrylic crystal displays a couple faint scratches, with no significant distractions.

Movement & Timekeeping: While the service history is unknown, the watch is currently performing exceptionally well, with observed timekeeping between -5 and +5 seconds per day and a healthy amplitude of approximately 300 degrees.
