A Note from the Curator
The OysterQuartz is one of the most fascinating anomalies in Rolex’s history. Produced between 1977 and 2001, with only an estimated 25,000–30,000 examples ever made, it represents a remarkably small chapter in the context of Rolex’s output. But what makes it truly compelling isn’t just its rarity, it’s the mindset behind it.
Rather than simply adopting quartz technology during the height of the quartz crisis, Rolex approached it the only way they knew how: by overengineering it. The in-house Calibre 5035 wasn’t just accurate, it was thermocompensated, finely finished, and built to chronometer standards, complete with a traditional gear train and serviceable architecture more akin to a mechanical movement than a disposable electronic one. As highlighted in period discussions and later buying guides, Rolex wasn’t chasing convenience...they were asserting control over a technology that was rapidly reshaping the industry.
And then there’s the design. The angular, integrated case and bracelet, shared in spirit with icons of the era like the Royal Oak, and Nautilus, it feels distinctly architectural, yet unmistakably Rolex. In two-tone form, the 17013 strikes a perfect balance: sharp and modern, yet warm and familiar, with the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet grounding it firmly in the Datejust lineage.
What you’re left with is something rare in every sense; not just in numbers, but in philosophy. A Rolex that reflects a moment when the brand quietly adapted, experimented, and proved that even in a quartz-powered world, it could still do things entirely its own way.
Happy hunting,

Condition Report & Contents
-
Case: Excellent overall condition. Retains brushed finish with strong, thick proportions and clearly defined beveled edges. The case shows standard wear for its age, and may have seen a light polish in its lifetime, but remains far from over-polished, with original lines still crisp and well preserved.
-
Bezel: Original fluted bezel in excellent condition. Sharp, well-defined, and showing only normal signs of wear with no notable damage.
-
Dial & Hands: Original tritium dial in exceptional condition, with all lume plots intact. Original hands with matching tritium lume, also fully intact.
-
Crystal: The sapphire crystal is in excellent condition with no scratching or majore distractions. There is a nearly microscopic chip on the beveled edge of the crystal that I only noticed when looking through the loop.
-
Movement: Rolex Calibre 5035 movement. Running strong with a fresh battery installed by our watchmaker. Service history unknown. As we do for all our vintage offerings, a service is recommended at the owner’s discretion at some point in the near future, but there is no immediate need.
-
Bracelet: Original two-tone Jubilee bracelet (Ref. 17013B), is tight, and correctly dated June 1990. Complete with all 13 links. Shows honest wear consistent with use, but remains in good condition with no damage.
-
Serial: E-series serial, dating the watch to 1990.
