This watch captures what makes IWC stand out: true in-house innovation. It combines Kurt Klaus’s fully synchronized perpetual calendar—adjustable with a single crown—with the brand’s signature Pellaton winding system, bringing two of IWC’s biggest breakthroughs together in one uniquely engineered package.
CONDITION
This watch is in impeccable overall condition, with only slight signs of surface wear from light use. The brown alligator leather strap is in almost mint condition, which no wear or significant warping to speak of. The gold folding clasp is in excellent shape, also with almost no wear.
The watch comes complete with full box, papers, booklets, branded micro-fibre cloth, stamped warranty card, and an additional year wheel component to push the calendar into into the year 2499!
WHY IT TICKS
The IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar ref. IW502103 is a standout piece that blends IWC’s signature oversized case design with impressive mechanical ingenuity. Housed in 18k rose gold with a 42.3mm case, it features a dark grey dial with applied gold Arabic numerals, offering a refined and balanced aesthetic.
This example is powered by the transitional Calibre 50611, part of IWC’s groundbreaking 5000-series movement family. First introduced in 2000, the Cal. 5000 marked IWC’s return to true in-house movement production after decades, delivering a 7-day power reserve through an enlarged barrel and the brand’s legendary Pellaton winding system. Patented in 1950, the Pellaton system stands apart for its low-friction cam and pawl design, unlike traditional gear-based setups, which winds the mainspring efficiently in both directions while reducing wear.
What makes this reference truly remarkable, though, is how it brings together the Cal. 5000 architecture with Kurt Klaus’s revolutionary perpetual calendar module, first invented in 1985. Designed entirely by hand, Klaus’s system allows the day, date, month, year, and moon phase to move in perfect unison—all adjustable through a single crown. No pushers, no recessed correctors...just elegant mechanical logic.
Kurt Klaus, watchmaker, engineer, and creator
of IWC's perpetual calendar
The Cal. 5000's torque and long reserve made it the perfect platform to house Klaus’s complication in a modern context, allowing IWC to reintroduce the perpetual calendar at scale in high-performance, elegant timepieces like this one. The moonphase is so precise it won't require correction until the year 2100, and thanks to the extra year wheel included in its own red wax-sealed tube, this watch is ready to track time another 300 years into the future.
Altogether, it’s a technically rich and enduringly elegant piece for collectors who value both horological innovation and IWC's bold, modern design language.
