Gifted to a young pilot before flight school and his deployment to Vietnam, this 1967 Gallet MultiChron 12 carries both history and horological pedigree. Housed in a patina-rich 14k gold case and powered by the highly sought-after Excelsior Park EP40 movement, this is a piece for the provenance-hungy collector in all of us.
GALLET: A PRIMER
This is one of those rare birds that ticks nearly every box: a beautifully preserved Gallet MultiChron 12 from 1967, powered by the revered Excelsior Park EP40 hand-wound chronograph movement. If you’re already familiar with Gallet, you know this is a name synonymous with tool watch innovation and technical excellence. If you’re new to the brand, here’s the quick primer:
Founded in 1826 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Gallet carved a niche for itself in the chronograph space long before it was trendy. Known for making high-precision timing instruments for aviators, motorsport legends, and military personnel, Gallet was a key player in the golden age of mechanical watches. Their primary market was the U.S., and they built their rep by pairing great design with technical credibility.
WHAT MAKES THIS ONE SPECIAL?
What makes this piece unique is the engine inside. Used by only a hand-full of elite brands, the Excelsior Park EP40 movement was one of the finest manually wound chronograph calibers of its era, with an extremely dedicated fan-base among the most knowledgable collectors of today. Gallet’s partnership with Excelsior Park led to some of the most reliable and collectible chronographs of the 20th century, and this MultiChron 12 is a clear example of that legacy.
Also, the cream white dial here is one of the most desirable variations: luminous Olympic torch-style hour markers, original lume-filled hands, and vibrant blue/red telemeter scale circling the outer edge (a scale historically used in military settings to gauge distance to artillery fire based on the speed of sound).
It has presence, function, and tons of character, and for collectors of vintage chronographs who value both story and technical excellence, this is one of the good ones. Actually…it’s one of the BEST ones!
THE STORY BEHIND THE WATCH
According to the previous owner, this watch belonged to a man named Gary Davis. It was gifted to him by his grandmother on May 31, 1967, just before he left for flight school and eventually served in the Vietnam War. Though the engraving has faded over time, the date “5-31-67” remains partially visible on the caseback, a subtle but powerful link to its past.
CONDITION
This watch is in exceptional vintage condition. The all-original tritium dial presents beautifully, only showing minor wear, as expected for a watch of this vintage. The 14k yellow gold case measures a perfect 37.5mm and has developed a rich, rainbow-like patina that many collectors covet in vintage gold watches. It could be polished back to a bright shine, but we’ve left it untouched to honour this watch’s story. The caseback still bears the faint original engraving: “5-31-67”.
Service history on this Excelsior Park EP40 movement is unknown but the movement is clean, running well, and the chronograph is operating as it should.
