ABOUT THE DOXA 300T
The Doxa Sub 300, introduced in 1967 (followed in 1969 by the release of the more robust 300T) is a landmark in the evolution of dive watches, offering a unique blend of functionality, innovation, and affordability.
Doxa, a Swiss brand based in Le Locle, entered the dive watch market with a fresh perspective under the direction of Urs Eschle, who led a dedicated team of professional divers and watchmakers. Unlike many contemporaries, Doxa did not simply replicate existing designs but reimagined what a dive watch could be.
The 300T Sharkhunter variant veered away from the original orange dials, in favour for a more stealthy matte black dial, which is a favourite among collectors. The design of the watch is completely geared towards practical legibility. With its oversized luminous markers and hands, and a unique focus on enhancing the minute hand's visibility, this watch was a game-changer. The watch also featured a patented no-decompression dive table bezel, developed in partnership with Jacques Cousteau, which allowed divers to monitor safe ascent times at a glance.
Doxa's innovative approach extended to the case design, which provided extra protection against underwater impacts, and the distinctive saw-tooth bezel, offering a superior grip even with gloves. Cousteau's endorsement and the Sub 300's rugged construction cemented its reputation, making it a beloved tool for divers and a timeless icon in horology.
CONDITION REPORT
This particular Sharkhunter has lived a life, and isn't shy about it (I expect no less from a tool watch of this stature). The watch has recently undergone a professional service by the previous owner. It remains in excellent working condition with a new, unsigned replacement crown and tube. Expected for a tool watch of this vintage, there is mild wear around the case (which appears to be unpolished). There is a scratch on the crystal, and some degradation to the lume on the hands (including missing lume on the seconds hand), a result of either long-term exposure to the elements, or a possible re-luming on the hands at some point.
As is common with these watches, the orange paint on the bezel has worn off. The bezel has a perfectly smooth and even click throughout the full rotation around the dial.
The watch comes with a retro-style black rubber tropic strap, and is ready for action!
